Neurology
Definition
1.The signs of cerebellar dysfunction.
Expansion
- DDysdiadochokinesia — clumsy rapid alternating movements
- AAtaxia — broad-based, unsteady gait
- NNystagmus — fast phase towards the lesion
- IIntention tremor — worsens on approaching a target
- SSlurred speech — scanning, staccato dysarthria
- HHypotonia — and pendular reflexes
Notes
A cerebellar lesion produces ipsilateral signs — the cerebellum does not decussate. Localise further with the rule that midline (vermis) lesions cause truncal and gait ataxia, while hemisphere lesions cause limb ataxia and intention tremor.
Causes worth a thought: stroke, MS, alcohol, posterior fossa tumours, and inherited ataxias (e.g. Friedreich's).
Origin
A pastry that hides the six hallmarks of a failing cerebellum.
