Neurology

Definition

1.The signs of cerebellar dysfunction.

Expansion

  1. DDysdiadochokinesia clumsy rapid alternating movements
  2. AAtaxia broad-based, unsteady gait
  3. NNystagmus fast phase towards the lesion
  4. IIntention tremor worsens on approaching a target
  5. SSlurred speech scanning, staccato dysarthria
  6. HHypotonia and pendular reflexes

Notes

A cerebellar lesion produces ipsilateral signs — the cerebellum does not decussate. Localise further with the rule that midline (vermis) lesions cause truncal and gait ataxia, while hemisphere lesions cause limb ataxia and intention tremor.

Causes worth a thought: stroke, MS, alcohol, posterior fossa tumours, and inherited ataxias (e.g. Friedreich's).

Origin

A pastry that hides the six hallmarks of a failing cerebellum.
